Cross-platform development

by Vijay Kiran

Here’s the snapshot from my Desktop/Laptop/Tabletop/Bedtop :-)

Running three Operating Systems ( Guest: Ubuntu Linux, Windows XP Home, Host: Mac OS X ), this is the ultimate cross platform development experience one can get. I’m in love with Parallels :-)

    hey Vijay,

I m the new member of the community of who all are in love with mac and i m a j2ee developer…just wanted to know about down sides of getting mac …other than price …i mean..assuming we ll be able to run windows…r there any softwares that we wont be able to use on it..or any other thing worth to be noted…

  • VijayKiran

    In one word “None”

Lalit, Welcome to the elite club :-)

I’m also an Opensource/Java developer. I work on both Enterprise and Desktop Java development. I’m switching to windows only for testing the application. If you are purely J2EE developer then you should not have any issues. The tools you might be using, all most all, might have been written in Java. And Java is fully supported under Mac OS X.
JBoss (Tomcat), Eclipse and Netbeans run fine on Mac OS X. Most of the Java developers are on Mac.

If you want to install windows you can make your mac dual-booting using BootCamp. If you want to work on Windows simultaneously, then you might be interested in purchasing Parallels or the free alternative : kju

    Vijay,
Thank you very much for ur reply…that is helping me a lot in taking my decision of getting MacBook/Pro.
Well…on review sites like Cnet/ZDNet..I m able to see many stores
like Apple store , MacMall, J&R., PC Connection, etc…which one will u recommend..from where did u get one ??

  • VijayKiran

I’m not sure about your location. I’m in bangalore. And there’s a Apple Store in the Forum (Koramangala).

I got my MacBookPro from Vijay Stores, Mumbai.

well these days i was just trying to keep myself updated about Macbook’s news..
    came across the site..http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com
Many buyers over here were affected by it…just wanted to know if u also experience the same problem…
even apple has formally declared that there is the problem and they even have published to download some firmware which they claim to solve the problem..http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbooksmcfirmwareupdate11.html
plz let me know if u know anything more about it..

    No Problems with MacBookPro

Seems like these random shutdown only happens with MacBook, I never experienced such problem.

If you are planning to buy a new MacBook, December is not the good time to buy. Apple normally announces new products during Jan. So your product might become obsolete in just a month :-) So better wait for a month and get the product you want.
